WHAT IS A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS?

The creation of this gown required tremendous skill, precision and patience. It’s when creating gowns like this, that we are so grateful that our team are so passionate about each and every bride’s vision and really do love what they do! Our talented and devoted team pulled together to make sure that every last stitch of this gown was completed to perfection.

SO DO I DESIGN IT MYSELF? HOW IS IT MADE?

The process of making a bespoke wedding dress begins with a private consultation with our head designer. During this consultation, you will discuss your dream design, requirements and features you envisage on your one-of-a-kind gown.

Our head designer will also have couture gowns ready for you to try on with similar features of your dream dress. You are free to try on designs with different necklines, embellishments, styles and fabrics.

No matter how ‘impossible’ your vision may be, our designers will ensure it comes to life, hand picking all fabrics and beading with you by their side.

Once the final sketch of your gown is created, our head designer and our team will hand craft your work-of-art with the most luxurious and high-quality fabrics available.

The initial private consultation with our head designer will take from 45 minutes to an hour.

HOW LONG DOES A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS TAKE TO COME TO LIFE?

To avoid disappointment, we encourage brides to contact our designers at least six months before your wedding to secure your booking, 12 months if possible.

The timeline will begin with your initial private consultation with our head designer. The time it takes to hand craft your wedding dress varies depending on the design and detail involved.

On average, a wedding dress with a simple style can take roughly 60 hours of work to create, whereas a more detailed style can take up to 500 hours! You need to also factor in fitting and alterations as the design takes shape. On average we need 6 to 8 months to make a bespoke wedding gown and 4 to 6 months for a Demi Couture gown.

HOW MUCH DOES THIS PROCESS COST?

The bespoke wedding dress process can be one of the most exciting and joyous opportunities in planning a wedding, allowing your dream dress to come to life and preparing you for your special day.

With this in mind, you may be surprised to know that a bespoke wedding dress is often the same price as a designer off-the-rack gown. As with a bespoke wedding dress you are removing the shop owner, or the ‘middle-man’ if you like and going directly to the dressmaker.

As you are purchasing from the dressmaker, they have the ability to purchase luxurious fabrics at wholesale prices.

As your dress is designed for your figure, you are able to avoid multiple alterations and can have the dress tailored to your individual needs, be it your body shape, pregnancy, or something else.

WHAT IS INVOLVED AT THE FITTING? WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

For your fittings we suggest you bring your wedding shoes and the undergarments you wish to wear on the day.

If there is any change to your undergarments or the height of your heels, this can change the fit and length of your gown, so these items are important.

What’s involved in your fitting depends on the complexity of the design and whether it’s a bespoke gown or a Demi Couture gown.

A first fitting for a bespoke wedding gown involves fitting and finalising the foundation shape on you. After which, your gown will be created, ready to try on at the next fitting.

The final fitting is the most exciting, this is when you see your completed design. At this fitting any last-minute changes and alterations will be made before you take your gown home with you.

Each unique bespoke design is different, and the number of fittings is dependent on the complexity of the design and construction of your gown.

This masterpiece of a gown was created for a client who truly knew what she was after when it came to a wedding dress. She approached us here in our Armadale showroom with a vision to make her wedding dress dreams come true, and oh did we do all that was in our power to do so. Inspired by the grandeur nature of dresses from the 1800’s, our client envisioned a gown with vintage elements brought into the here and now. Our dedicated team, as usual, were up to face the challenge head on.

MASTERFUL ARTISTRY AND EXQUISITE FABRICS

The creation of this gown required tremendous skill, precision and patience. It’s when creating gowns like this, that we are so grateful that our team are so passionate about each and every bride’s vision and really do love what they do! Our talented and devoted team pulled together to make sure that every last stitch of this gown was completed to perfection.

40+ METRES OF FABRIC, 500 HOURS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

This gown was a record-breaker for us, with over 25 metres of raw silk and another 20 metres of additional fabrics, making this one gown comprise of 40+ metres of fabric. Further, this masterpiece fit for a queen, involved 500 hours of craftsmanship. The extravagant and highly intricate bodice & sleeve embroidery was custom designed and executed with great mastery by the most talented artisans that make up our close-knit team. The embellishments were created from the most delicate and dazzling ivory, soft gold and hand-encrusted beads.

This magnificent gown was a real feat for the SBC atelier, but well worth it knowing we can bring our gorgeous bride, Geraldine’s, dream to life! We’re just sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to see the pictures from her wedding day.

Our Shehzarin Batha Couture real bride, Marian, answers some questions for us about her special day…

Where did you meet your husband?
Anthony and I met on the first day of high school, when we were twelve! We went through high school just as friends, we always found interest in each other and shared a few cheeky kisses at friend’s birthday parties over the years. At the age of 22 we were both out one night at Trak nightclub and it was there that we shared another one of our kisses. The next day, with my first cousin’s (who was also his best friend) blessing he asked me out on a date. He picked me up from my parent’s house the following Tuesday, took me on an amazing first date and the rest was history!

The Proposal

Can you tell us about the proposal?
Anthony and I were about to build our dream home, the land had just been excavated – we just needed to start building the house. It was my birthday, September 11, and we were going to have a dinner with family and friends to celebrate. He called me ten minutes before our guests were to arrive to tell me his car had broken down. He had gone to see how the excavation had gone that day and now he needed me to pick him up!

I went to pick him up feeling a bit frustrated that I had to go out when the guests were on their way – and there he was on the land, waiting with a birthday cake that read ‘Happy Birthday – Will You Marry Me?’ It was such an incredible moment, he asked me to spend the rest of our lives together at the place where our forever house would be.

The Venue

What was your choice of venue and why?
Choosing Lincoln of Toorak was really simple. We had our first ‘official grown up kiss’ just downstairs at Trak, so it was such a simple decision. Why not celebrate our wedding at the venue where it all began?

The Memories

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?
It was definitely walking down the isle with my dad and seeing Anthony at the altar waiting for me. I was so excited, I couldn’t even believe that it was really happening! Anthony kissed my dad’s hand and then looked at me and said ‘Wow”.

The Dress

Tell us about the experience of finding the perfect dress?
My mum, sister and I had booked in a day of shopping down High Street in Armadale to try on dresses. I was so excited and nervous. Would I find THE dress? Would I find it today? Would it take me a long time? So many questions! The Shehzarin Batha Couture boutique was the second store I went into. Shehzarin greeted me with such excitement, she was so sincere and lovely. She walked me through her boutique and showed me the different dresses. The Jacqui dress caught my eye right away. I went into the dressing room to try it on and as soon as I put the dress on, I knew it was the one! It sounds so cliché, but it really did feel like such a perfect moment!

It was so flattering on my hourglass figure, it seemed as though the dress was made for me! I felt so beautiful and it wasn’t even done up! The shade was not quite ‘Greek wedding’, I needed something in white and this was more of a champagne colour. Shehz had me back a few weeks later with different samples and suggestions of what would look best with the dress style and my skin tone. We ended up choosing ‘bone white’ and it was even better than I could have imagined. Shehz made the process so easy and enjoyable. She was so easy to work with and always made sure I was happy with the progress of the dress. I feel lucky to have had Shehzarin Batha Couture create the most beautiful dress for mine and Anthony’s amazing day.

The Advice

Finally, can you offer any advice to brides to be?
My advice to future brides would be to enjoy the process with your fiancé leading up to the wedding day. All you want to do is marry then and so you end up counting down the days leading up to the wedding. Its fun to appreciate all the pre-wedding fun together too!
